My background is in political programmes – making daily news and current affairs for BBC Radio 4 for many years – with my last job there as producer, for the 1997 Election Night results programme for Radios 4 and 5.
When I moved to TV in 1997, I became a chief reporter, as the BBC’s special correspondent for the BBC News at Six and then moved to anchoring BBC1 News bulletins for sixteen years.
I also hosted BBC Breakfast for 11 years, as well as many prime-time shows on BBC1. In 2012, I rejoined Radio 4 as co-presenter of Saturday Live and continued to present TV news bulletins, while also hosting BBC1 formats like Your Money Their Tricks and National Treasures Live. I also guest-hosted The Andrew Marr Show and Crimewatch.
In 2016 I moved to ITN/Channel 5 News to front its flagship evening news programme and made six series of ITV’s Save Money, Good Health. I’ve also made BBC Radio 4 documentaries and programmes on the mind and brain, including The Thought Chamber, How to Have a Better Brain (described by The Psychologist magazine as “touching and illuminating, a great listen”) and The Science of Resilience.
I’m currently hosting one of BBC Sounds most listened-to series, BBC Radio 4’s Life Changing
